This 4-ingredient chocolate sauce is dairy-free, vegan and paleo friendly, and made in just 5 minutes flat. Pour it over your favorite ice cream, drizzle it into smoothies and milkshakes, or just add a spoonful to your favorite breakfast, because, really, there’s no wrong way to enjoy this simple, healthy chocolate sauce.
We could all use a quick, easy, healthy chocolate sauce recipe in our lives, right?
One that takes just a minute to whisk together, uses simple pantry ingredients, and is totally appropriate for drizzling over ice cream, swirling into breakfast bowls, or dunking fruit into.
The answer, obviously, is yes.
Let’s do this.
This isn’t just any old chocolate sauce. It’s naturally sweetened with maple syrup, boldly dark chocolate flavored thanks to cocoa powder, and the perfect pourable consistency thanks to a combination of coconut oil and water.
And, if you’re keeping track, those are the only four ingredients needed to make this crazy-simple but absolutely perfect chocolate sauce: maple syrup, cocoa powder, coconut oil, and water.
Sure, you could add a tiny pinch of salt and a few drops of vanilla extract if you’re feeling a little extra today. You could use all coconut oil and no water for a magic shell- like sauce that hardens as soon as you pour it over ice cream; you could reduce the oil and water for a thicker, hot-fudge like consistency or add a pinch of cinnamon and cayenne powder for a Mexican-inspired chocolate sauce.
But, today, on this hottest of hot days in the middle of an intense heat wave, let’s just keep it simple.
Dump ingredients into bowl, stir until smooth, drizzle over ice cream, eat.
I think you’re going to LOVE this crazy simple chocolate sauce recipe! Despite it’s simplicity, it’s just absolutely wonderful in every way. Pour it over Overnight Oats and No-Churn Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream, drizzle it over Chocolate Peanut Butter Avocado Pudding and Smoothie Bowls, and keep a jar of it stocked in the fridge for easy hot fudge sundaes anytime you need one!

- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 2 Tablespoons water
- 2 Tablespoons virgin coconut oil, melted
- 1. Put all ingredients into a small bowl and stir well to fully combine. Keep stirring until the sauce is completely smooth. Use immediately, or transfer to a container and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Sauce will thicken slightly in the fridge; either bring it back to room temperature for a drizzle-able consistency, or microwave it for 10 seconds before using.
- Make it thicker, like hot fudge sauce: reduce water to 2 Tablespoons
- Make it like magic shell (so it will harden when it hits ice cream): use coconut oil in place of the water. This version will completely harden in the fridge and needs to be heated before using again.
