Lets make a cold, creamy, ultra thick bowl of fruit + greens, load it up with granola and berries, and eat it for breakfast!
…or lunch.
…or an afternoon snack.
I’m not here to judge what time of day you’d like to enjoy this dreamy smoothie bowl.
Let’s dive right in!
Okay, so, it’s 2020. You’ve been stuck at home (and/or perhaps working in a more stressful environment than usual) for nearly two months. I realize you probably don’t need me to tell you how to make a smoothie.
This is not, after all, rocket science.
I get it.
But…maybe you really do need this one?
Trust me, this green smoothie bowl is something extra special. It’s my go-to recipe when I want to essentially eat something the consistency of soft serve ice cream for a meal, and also get some greens into my life at the time time (so, prettymuch any warm, sunny day from now until winter).
The secret to making it so velvety and luscious?
Frozen banana + avocado.
That’s the whole secret.
The combination of these two ingredients take literally any smoothie into ice cream territory. A boatload of spinach or baby kale, a splash of almond milk or water, and any other fun frozen fruit add-ins like mango or pineapple just take it to the next level. But without the avocado and frozen banana, it’s just not the same.
Simply dump everything into a blender and puree until thick, scoop into a bowl, then it’s time to consider (quite possibly) the best part of this whole equation: THE TOPPINGS.
You could keep it simple with a sprinkle of granola, toss on a handful of pumpkin or hemp seeds, or tumble in some fresh or berries.
But, why stop there? A drizzly spoonful of almond butter, a dollop of yogurt or coconut cream, some melted chocolate, a slice of leftover banana bread crumbled up over top…the smoothie bowl is your oyster, my friends.
Whatever you choose to top it with, this ultra creamy smoothie bowl is sure to become a new favorite in your house this summer!

Thick + Creamy Green Smoothie Bowl
Time: 5 minutes
Yields: 1
Ingredients:
- 1 frozen ripe banana (peeled before frozen)
- 1/2 of a ripe avocado
- 1-2 large handfuls baby spinach or baby kale
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or water)
- optional: 1/2 cup frozen mango and/or frozen pineapple
- granola, berries, nut butter, etc, for topping
Instructions:
- Place all ingredients into the bowl of a blender and blend on high until smooth. If your blender has a tamper attachment, use it here! If not, you may need to stop and scrape down the sides once or twice in the process. If yours is absolutely not blending, try adding more almond milk, a splash at a time, to help it along. The more milk you add, though, the thinner the end result will be, so try not to add too much!
- Pour into a bowl and serve immediately, topped with granola, fruit, etc.
NOTES: I like to peel and freeze bananas whole, then just break them in half by hand before placing in my blender. Depending on the power of your blender, it might make it easier to blend if you cut your banana into 4-6 pieces before putting into the blender!
