Creamy Hot Chocolate Elixir

This Creamy Hot Chocolate Elixir has been giving me LIFE on these chilly fall days.

It’s warm, comforting, frothy, creamy, and, if you want, spiked with some powerful heath-promoting ingredients like virgin coconut oil, raw cacao powder, adaptogenic mushrooms, raw honey, turmeric, or full-spectrum hemp extract (aka CBD oil).

Not all of them at once, mind you, or we’d have a $20 elixir on our hands, which isn’t my goal; I strongly believe that healthy food should be affordable for everyone, and don’t think you need any fancy trendy health food products to live a healthy life. So use what you can, and know that this will be just as creamy, satisfying, and life-giving no matter which ‘boosters’ you choose.

Creamy Hot Chocolate Elixir [Vegan, Paleo, CBD, Healthy, Adaptogenic]

Why I’m Loving This Elixir

First and foremost, it tastes good. You guys know I’m all about chocolate, and this elixir doesn’t disappoint. It’s rich, creamy, and oh-so-chocolatey.

It’s the perfect warm + cozy drink for chilly mornings and evenings. Just holding the warm mug brings me so much joy, and then sipping on liquid chocolate seals the deal.

It’s totally adaptable to suit your taste presences and which ingredients you have on hand. Like it sweeter? Add in more maple syrup or raw honey. No cacao powder? Go for good old cocoa powder. Want a drink that’s extra frothy and will keep you full for a few hours? Be sure to blend in coconut oil! Feeling like your immune system needs a boost? Add a scoop of adaptogenic mushrooms. Need something extra relaxing and soothing? Add in a few drops of CBD. I’m providing you with a base recipe, and expect you to make it your own! Creamy Hot Chocolate Elixir [Vegan, Paleo, CBD, Healthy, Adaptogenic]

Let’s Talk Ingredients

This recipe is made in a blender in literally 1 minute (plus the time it takes you to boil water). Here’s what you’ll need to make it:

Cacao  or Cocoa Powder. Cacao is raw, less processed cocoa powder, so it retains more of the nutrients found in the cacao plant. I love this raw cacao and always keep this cocoa powder in my pantry for baking, too. I’ve made it with both and have no real preference either way. Use whichever you have or whichever makes more sense for your budget and your kitchen.

Raw Honey or Maple Syrup. If you’ve never tried raw honey, now’s the time to get a jar! It’s the raw, unfiltered, unheated, completely all-natural version of the honey sold in little plastic bears in the store. Because of this, the naturally occurring health promoting properties of the honey haven’t been killed off, and it still has all of the antibacterial, antimicrobial, immune-boosting goodness of honey in it’s natural state. Maple syrup works here, too! I love it’s complex caramel-y flavor, it’s trace minerals, and how it seamlessly blends into the drink. Again, choose whichever you have/love.

Vanilla Extract. Use the good stuff, always. Ain’t nobody got time for imitation vanilla flavoring.

Sea SaltTrust me, just a tiny pinch makes a big difference in the overall flavor profile of this hot chocolate.

Your Milk of Choice.  Warmed milk makes this hot chocolate steamy + creamy. I’ve tried it with coconut milk, almond milk, cashew milk and cow’s milk, and truly, it’s just about what you like. They’re all good here. I’ve just used hot water, or half water + half milk before, but ultimately came to the conclusion that this hot chocolate best with all milk, whichever you choose.

Health Boosters/Optional Add-Ins. These are what transform the hot chocolate into a hot chocolate elixir. They’re totally optional, but if you have them, I recommend picking one or two. You don’t need ALL of them in this one drink!

  • Virgin Coconut Oil is a great source of healthy fat and also makes the hot chocolate extra creamy and frothy when you blend it up. If your milk is particularly thin/watery, I highly recommend adding coconut oil to the hot chocolate!
  • Adaptogenic Mushrooms are great for supporting your immune system and add absolutely zero ‘mushroom’ flavor to this drink. I like this Power Potion blend, which is the most affordable (but still organic + sustainable) option I’ve seen.
  • Turmeric adds a tiny tint of yellow to this elixir, and adds anti-inflammatory properties to the drink (be sure to add a little pinch of black pepper if you’re using turmeric, as it’s more readily absorbed by the body that way).
  • Luce Farm’s Full Spectrum Hemp Extract is a whole plant, organic, small family farm-grown CBD that’s the best quality I’ve found. The dropper bottle is expensive, but has sixty servings, so it will last you forever! We also love their honey or coconut oil, if you’d rather use either of those instead. [pssst: you can save 10% on all their products with code: BAKEDGREENS]

How to Make it

Either: pour everything into a blender, blend on high for 10 seconds.

Or:  gently warm everything in a small pot on the stove and use a hand-held milk frother to combine it all together + add a little bit of froth.

Pour into a mug, warm up your fingers on the outside and your body on the inside, and enjoy.

That’s it!

Total Time

Ingredients
  1. 1 1/4 cups (10oz) milk of choice (almond, coconut, cow's, etc)
  2. 2 Tablespoons cacao or cocoa powder
  3. 1 Tablespoon raw honey or maple syrup (more or less, to taste)
  4. 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  5. small pinch of salt
  6. optional add-ins: 1/2-1 Tablespoon virgin coconut oil; 1/4 teaspoon adaptogenic mushroom powder; 1/2 teaspoon turmeric; 1 serving (~25mg) CBD. I recommend picking one or two of these, but you can add them all if you'd like!*
Instructions
  1. 1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan until steaming, or in the microwave for about 1 minute, until very hot.
  2. 2. To make on the stove: turn off the heat once milk is steaming, then add all remaining ingredients and whisk to combine. If desired, use a hand-held milk frother to get extra froth on top.
  3. 3. To make in a blender (my preferred method): pour hot milk + all remaining ingredients into a blender and blend for 15 seconds, until creamy and frothy.
  4. 4. Pour into a mug and drink immediately (pro tip: run your tap water until very hot, then fill your mug with hot water to let it heat up while you make your hot chocolate. When ready to drink, pour out the hot water and you'll have a mug that's already hot and keeps your drink warm longer!)
Notes
  1. *I sometimes add all of these, and sometimes add none- it just depends on what I have in the house. I almost always opt for the coconut oil when making in the blender, since it makes it extra frothy, which I love.
  2. If you want to make this caffeinated, try swapping half of the milk for about 5oz (nearly 2/3 cup) or reduce the milk by 1/4 cup and add a shot of espresso!
